Choice takes the front seat in NHS Supply Chain’s re-launched cardiology catalogue

Tuesday 19 November 2013

With clinical input into procurement and data transparency both key topics identified within the Department of Health’s (DH) recently published Procurement Strategy, we have redeveloped the cardiology, radiology and pacing product pages of our online catalogue to support trusts in delivering first-class patient care through the provision of full clinical choice and a clear product pricing structure.

“Our original online catalogue was launched a couple of years ago, and customer feedback showed that the cardiology, radiology and pacing product pages weren’t quite hitting the mark with trust procurement departments” explains Tom Mason, Senior Buyer for Cardiology. “We’ve spent time redeveloping the content from both a clinical and procurement perspective to deliver a comprehensive range of over 30,000 products, providing clinical choice and a more robust ordering process that meets the evolving needs of NHS trusts.”

The NHS spends around £250 million every year on cardiology, radiology and pacing products, covering everything from stents and guide wires through to pacemakers. With department budgets being squeezed, clinical input into the procurement process is becoming more crucial to ensure that criteria such as clinical preference, usability and safety are all taken into consideration when purchasing decisions are being made rather than just cost if the best patient outcomes are to be ensured.

“At NHS Supply Chain, we know that effective procurement decisions are not simply about opting for the cheapest products available” continues Tom. “The DH Procurement Strategy clearly recognises the importance of adopting different approaches to delivering efficiencies across clinical and non-clinical product categories. Our updated online catalogue provides a clear pricing structure to show the cost upfront, with the potential for trusts to benefits from cost savings across specific product categories thanks to NHS Supply Chain’s unique framework agreement with suppliers.”

Procurement teams and clinicians can be confident that products bought through our online catalogue are fully compliant with EU public procurement regulations and using it removes the need for trusts to develop individual product tenders. Our simple ordering, invoicing and delivery processes reduce administration costs for trusts and ensure trusts receive the products they need, when they need them. What’s more, our own procurement team is on hand to offer advice and guidance to trusts looking to identify alternative product options that will deliver the same clinical outcomes at a reduced cost.

City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust have been using our route to meet their cardiology needs for some time, and have managed to save around £240,000 per year through this route whilst maintaining clinical choice. “By teaming up with NHS Supply Chain, we’ve been able to simplify administration and cut cardiology supply costs dramatically, but still provide clinicians with their favoured products” explains Jolene Grainger, Procurement Officer at the trust.
