NHS Supply Chain, under Directive 2006/66/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, has now been classified a distributor of batteries. We are obliged to provide a battery recycling service free of charge.
NHS Supply Chain has now formalised this service with Battery Back who will act as the NHS Supply Chain battery collection and processing partner.
Battery Back will provide NHS trusts with a unique account which allows a number of trust's personnel to request battery collection containers. These containers range from 5 litre to 120 litre containers, so all areas of the hospital can be accommodated.

As part of the information that will be generated for the collection, your trust will be able to see how much carbon they have saved by recycling batteries.
NHS Supply Chain would recommend a trust has a minimum of 1 x 120 litre container and use this as a main collection point for the trust's smaller containers.
By adopting this approach the trust can further reduce its carbon footprint ensuring that only the full 120 litre containers are collected.
If this is not possible due to space constraints, the trust can simply request a collection when the containers are full.
