Raising Hospital Food and Nutrition Standards Across the NHS

This Forum provides participants with a unique opportunity to evaluate efforts to improve standards of hospital food available for patients as well as staff and visitors across the NHS, and discuss ongoing and future strategies for encouraging a sustainably healthier approach to nutrition. Sector leaders will share policy updates, including how addressing nutrition fits into the NHS Long Term Plan and how improvements will be monitored. In addition, best practice case studies will share proven methods for changing staff and patient behaviours towards food, tackling malnutrition and resourcing these efforts through effective use of innovative technology.

Rona Miranda, Account Director, NHS Supply Chain: Food will be speaking about improving NHS Food and nutrition standards through improved procurement and supply chains. Key points will include:

  • Summarising the progress made through Food Forums during 2019, bringing together catering and procurement professionals in 6 English regions to increase engagement and understand challenges
  • Considering how to successfully raise standards of food and beverages offered for both staff, patients and visitors, at a time of constrained budgets: Reviewing contracts, sourcing local suppliers, and utilising feedback
  • Encouraging regional collaboration for procurement of food and beverages in order to share best practice across Trusts, as well as to increase purchasing power with smaller prices
  • Discussing how NHS Supply Chain: Food Frameworks may be updated in line with the new set of NHS Food Standards following the Food Review
