  • Customers will only be allocated these products if they have previously purchased them prior to February 2020 and require them for mixing chemotherapy chemicals.

Change:

  • There are global pressures on the manufacture of 9n Nitrile Specialist Examination Gloves used for mixing chemotherapy products.
  • This is due to manufacturers focusing their production output on supplying standard 6n Nitrile Examination Gloves and consequently they are unable to provide significant stocks of these more specialist gloves.
  • The 9n Nitrile Gloves are often used across a range of activities which require a glove that is thicker and has additional features such as a higher level of chemical protection and cytotoxic testing data. These thicker gloves are often used in chemotherapy preparation and administration dependent on local policy and procedures.
  • There are 50 product codes affected.
  • There is also a range of 6n Accelerator Free Gloves which is marketed specifically for use in chemotherapy administration. These offer a dual purpose of accelerator free and enhanced testing for chemical and cytotoxic use. There is stock available of these products for use in administration of chemotherapy products.

Impact:

  • To protect the supply of these specialist gloves and ensure they are allocated to trusts appropriately, the 50 product codes will be temporarily unavailable to order from our online catalogue.
  • Customers who require these gloves to mix chemotherapy products will need to complete a form and send to ICUrequirement@supplychain.nhs.uk.
  • Customers will only be allocated these products if they have previously purchased them prior to February 2020 and require them for mixing chemotherapy chemicals.
  • Please See our Downloads ▼ section to refer to the product listing for further information on the affected product codes.
  • We are working closely with suppliers and the Personal Protective Equipment cell to globally source additional products.
  • Unfortunately, we anticipate disruption to supply until January 2021.
  • We will update this ICN when we have further information.

Next Steps:

  • Customers are asked to only request these products for the mixing of chemotherapy products rather than for the distribution. Please note that the quantity allocation will be managed by NHSE/I and you may not receive the quantity you requested.
  • Customers are advised to order 6n Nitrile Examination Glove of the required standard for the administration of chemotherapy products.
