Important Customer Notice Update

Ref: 2021/1184 ICN Number: 1184

Due to these ongoing supply issues, maternity units and providers must take the following actions to conserve the supply. At this time, NHS Supply Chain, in collaboration with the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England and NHS Improvement, continues to pursue various options to procure additional stock, explore alternative products, and manage the backorder until production is restored. Please note, we are not expecting full restoration of production until at least March 2021.

Required product conservation actions:

Recommendations Asks for practice
Apply Foetal Scalp Electrodes only when unable to obtain a satisfactory,
interpretable tracing (i.e. due to contact issues
after troubleshooting manoeuvres are
unsuccessful)
Do not use routinely; for patient mobility; or automatically for monitoring multiple pregnancies when continuous electronic foetal monitoring tracing is interpretable
Have the most experienced clinician apply the
Foetal Scalp Electrodes
Do not let student midwives or more inexperienced staff apply Foetal Scalp Electrodes at this time
Use all other methods available to trouble shoot prior to application of Foetal Scalp Electrodes (transducer reposition, O2 sat monitor to differentiate maternal pulse, adjusting the monitor settings to differentiate foetal heart rates in multiple pregnancies) Do not use for teaching/training in university or
clinical practice settings or for demonstration purposes at this time
Use intermittent auscultation when there is no indication for continuous electronic foetal monitoring. Remember do not offer continuous electronic foetal monitoring to women at low risk of complications in established labour.

Additional Strategies:

  • Clinicians are encouraged to regularly discuss the appropriate use of Foetal Scalp Electrodes in team meetings, safety huddles and multi-professional ward rounds.
  • A reminder that an interpretable tracing from continuous electronic foetal monitoring, regardless if it is normal, suspicious or pathological, is not an indication to use a Foetal Scalp Electrodes.
  • An internal Foetal Scalp Electrodes should only be used if there is inability to obtain or interpret a foetal heart rate tracing.

Please continue to follow your local business continuity arrangements for supply disruption. NHS Supply Chain will continue to monitor levels at a national level.
