Plastic Packaging Tax Update
Transforming how plastic packaging waste is handled is a key environmental objective for the UK this year.
A number of initiatives are in progress, including the new Plastic Packaging Tax, or PPT.
PPT will be most important to suppliers that produce ‘finished’ packaging and importers of plastic packaging (if it does not contain at least 30% recycled material).
The creation of this new environmental tax provides a financial incentive to use recycled plastic – greater demand for this should in turn support businesses that recycle plastic waste, instead of it being incinerated or going to landfill sites.
The rate of the tax will be £200 per metric tonne of plastic packaging.
