NHS Supply Chain and Barts Health NHS Trust shortlisted for CIPS Awards

Wednesday 14 June 2017

We are proud to announce that NHS Supply Chain and Barts Health NHS Trust Chain have been shortlisted for the prestigious Chartered Institute of Procurement (CIPS) Supply Management awards 2017.

A finalist in the ‘Best Process Improvement Initiative’ category, the nomination is testimony to the joint work on a product switching process which saved the trust over £1 million in its first year. The process, which involved challenging the status quo, has also increased clinical engagement and patient safety.

The partnership between NHS Supply Chain and Barts Health first started back in 2015. Following a merger, the trust was keen to do something about the ad-hoc fragmented nature of the procurement of medical supplies across their five sites.

“For a single trust, product choices are complicated enough but with a merger the challenges are multiplied,” said Lucie Jaggar, Barts Health NHS Trust, Director of Procurement and e-Commerce.

Barts Health now have a structured product switching process for clinical supplies and product changes which  used to take around 6 months and now takes as little as 4 weeks. Engaging clinical staff was a key part of improving the process.

“Now senior nurses are the decision makers on the products generally used by nursing staff,” said Caroline Alexander, Barts Health NHS Trust, Director of Nursing. “The Clinical Evaluation Group allows discussions to take place and any barriers to be identified and addressed.”

Perhaps the greatest benefit from this project is that the partnership team model has become a blueprint to help other trusts around the country. Sharing case studies and savings examples has enabled a fast tracking of the same product switch at other trusts.

CIPS Supply Management Award finalists will be announced at a ceremony in London on 13 September, 2017.
