HCSA Workshop - small changes, big differences

Friday 4 December 2015

Procurement professionals from across the NHS came together to share knowledge, insights and to hear from experts and influencers across the health service at this year’s annual Health Care Supply Association (HCSA) Conference and Exhibition.

Efficiency, savings and engagement were key themes that transcended throughout the two day conference that took place in Solihull at the end of November 2015.

In a landscape where every penny counts we were pleased to host a workshop for the delegates in partnership with the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), Clinical Procurement Specialist Network (CPSN) and Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The ‘small changes, big differences’ campaign was launched in March 2015 to engage and involve nurses and clinicians in the procurement process. The campaign is championed by the Clinical Reference Board, which is chaired by Mandie Sunderland, Chief Nurse at Nottingham University Hospitals and is made up of clinical representatives from across the NHS.

The heart of the campaign is to drive standardisation - to improve patient safety and to utilise the vast knowledge and experience that nurses and clinicians have. By involving nurses in the procurement process it enables trust procurement teams to source the right products at the best prices.

Through a survey conducted at the early stages of the campaign it was evident that wastage could be reduced if products were standardised across trusts as well having a clear mechanism of identifying products based on cost. This spearheaded the development of our Traffic Light Support System, which helps to label products in stock rooms to raise awareness of their cost before selection, driving efficiencies without creating any extra work.

Purchasing efficiently directly benefits patient care; at present there is over £58million pounds worth of savings available for the NHS - just on the products which nurses purchase. By making small changes, big differences will follow and our range of resources can help to facilitate discussions and provide tools and guides to help implement changes at your trust.

Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, have clinicians and nurses working closely with their procurement teams to ensure that they are not only getting the right products at the best price but they have found that by working collaboratively their nursing staff have more time to focus on frontline patient care.
