Make Maintenance renewals part of your new year's resolution

Friday 16 December 2016

With the new year upon us we’d like to take the opportunity for NHS Supply Chain to wish you all a happy and prosperous 2017!

The new year is also of course a time to set new goals and resolutions. So, with that in mind we wanted to take the opportunity to inspire you with a series of key points to ensure that the renewal of your maintenance contracts is a resolution which you will keep.

Why renew on time:

  • On time renewals help to avoid unplanned expense and inconvenience due to breakdowns, emergency call out charges and equipment being out of service.
  • Some suppliers offer financial incentives in exchange for an on time or early renewal – this is an opportunity to make further savings and is something that should not be overlooked.
  • At the end of every maintenance contract there is a patient. Continuity of cover is therefore not only extremely important for maintaining equipment efficiency but is critical to ensure clinical services are safe and maximise throughput.
  • Costly PCI’s (Pre Contract Inspections) in the event of lapsed contracts are not required where contracts are renewed on time.
  • Planning maintenance renewals gives you time to make the right decision in terms of cover level and length of contract term (Multi-Year Contracts offer higher savings than annual contracts).
  • Evaluating maintenance requirements and your install base may stimulate equipment replacement planning.
  • You will be able to claim any cash releasing savings made for the full contract term (as opposed to the proportion of the late renewed contract).
  • It provides the opportunity to align your contract term to your equipment replacement programme. This allows you to take advantage of multi-year discounts that offer improved savings opportunities which can contribute to cost improvement plan targets.

Despite these benefits 80% of maintenance contracts are renewed late or are allowed to lapse before renewing. We also know that where contracts are renewed late saving opportunities are often missed. We can all work together in 2017 to reverse these trends and make on time renewal our New Year commitment.
