Meat Contents Update

Tuesday 19 February 2013

The ongoing situation surrounding meat authenticity is a concern for us all and, during this time we want you to be fully informed of our work and ongoing commitment to you.

NHS Supply Chain is one of the key suppliers managing the sourcing, delivery and supply of healthcare products and food for over 1,000 NHS trusts and healthcare organisations.

We have three main contract ranges – Ready Meals, Fresh and Frozen meat and poultry, and Chilled and Frozen Foods with 54 Suppliers servicing one or more of the ranges.

Any supplier wishing to provide service on the contract must follow a stringent EU procurement compliant tender process and only where they successfully pass every quality and tender criteria, will they progress to contract award.

We have already been in contact with all the meat product suppliers to verify that their meat matches what is on the contents label.

In addition our technical partner has written to all NHS Supply Chain’s suppliers requesting full supply chain testing to include transparency around the DNA authenticity of their meat and full visibility of traceability of their supply chain. This was laid out in a letter of the 8 February with a deadline for results by the 22 February 2013.

At this time we are not aware of any issue affecting our supply chain and will update you further should the situation change.

Thank you for your patience at this time and should you have any queries, please contact us at
