New Desserts and Snacks Framework from NHS Supply Chain

Thursday 1 October 2015

On 1 October 2015, NHS Supply Chain launched its Desserts and Snacks framework. Previously two separate frameworks (Confectionery & Snacks and Desserts & Preserves), this new consolidated framework is valid for a full three year period with the option to extend for an additional 12 months.

The framework is split into ten Lots:

  • Lot 1 - Potato Crisps
  • Lot 2 - Patient Biscuits
  • Lot 3 - Retail Confectionery
  • Lot 4 - Patient feeding cakes, muffins and confectionery
  • Lot 5 - Retail cakes, biscuits, flapjacks and muffins
  • Lot 6 - Custard
  • Lot 7 - Dessert mixes
  • Lot 8 - Pie fillings
  • Lot 9 - Preserves and spreads
  • Lot 10 - Individual desserts

There are 20 suppliers on the framework – including seven new suppliers – offering an extensive range of patient and retail confectionary. There are a number of products available that meet special dietary requirements such as gluten free, wheat free and diabetic suitable products.

The majority of our products are stocked lines but we also offer an E direct route for particular areas. Our suppliers can also provide Point Of Sale merchandise on request. Competitive tendering process for this framework saved a total of £260k which will help us continue to deliver savings.

We recognise the importance of Government Buying Standards for Food (GBSF) in NHS catering operations and this framework helps customers to comply with the various criteria. For example, suppliers are required to source from producers who are already members of farm assurance schemes, or are working towards becoming members.

Food Safety

It is a requirement of award to the NHS Supply Chain Desserts and Snacks Framework Agreement that all suppliers achieve “Approved Supplier” status from NHS Supply Chain’s UKAS accredited appointed Certification Body, Support, Training & Services Ltd (STS). STS carry out audits annually of the BRC or SALSA accreditation (where already held by suppliers), or where this is not held, STS will undertake a full site audit prior to giving approved status.
