New online system for identifying and supporting health technologies goes live

Monday 29 April 2019

HealthTech Connect is a secure online system for identifying and supporting health technologies (including devices, diagnostics, and digital) as they move from inception to adoption in the UK health and care system.

It officially went live on 29 April 2019 following a successful period of testing (soft launch). The new NHS England-funded system has been developed by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) in tandem with a range of partner organisations including industry associations.

The advent of HealthTech Connect fills a gap in the health and social care system and will assist with initiatives such as the NHS England High-Cost Tariff-Excluded Devices (HCTED) programme, for which NHS Supply Chain is the delivery partner.

It will achieve this through the assessment of new devices coming to the market to see if they add value, reduce variation and importantly add more benefits for patients.

The HCTED programme aims to deliver improvements in clinical practice, device optimisation and national leverage on devices used to gain potential savings of up to £100 million for the NHS to re-invest into patient care.

During the soft launch of HealthTech Connect, over 100 companies registered to use the system and provided valuable and positive feedback, which also helped to identify any technical issues with the system that have now been corrected.

The new system aims to identify and support health technologies that offer novel benefits and intended for medical devices, diagnostic and digital health technologies that:

  • Offer benefits to patients or healthcare professionals compared to those already offered by current practice, or
  • Provide a system or resource benefit to the UK health and care system compared to those already offered by current practice.

HealthTech Connect is not intended to be an extensive catalogue of all available health technologies, or for health technologies that do not offer novel benefits compared with existing technologies.
