NHS Supply Chain and Barts Health NHS Trust finalists at prestigious CIPS awards

On Wednesday night representatives from NHS Supply Chain and Barts Health NHS Foundation Trust were in a packed room of procurement professionals in London for the Chartered Institute of Procurement (CIPS) Supply Management Awards 2017.

Shortlisted for the ‘Best Process Improvement Initiative’ category, the event provided an opportunity for the team that have worked so well together to share in their success of reaching the finals.

Speaking at the Awards ceremony Lucie Jaggar, Director of Procurement and eCommerce for Barts Health NHS Trust said:

“Being a finalist at the CIPS Awards was a great recognition of the hard work and collaboration which made our project so successful.”

“We now have a structured process in place for product switching which has saved our trust over £1 million a year, improved clinical engagement and patient safety. The partnership with NHS Supply Chain and their account team has been instrumental in delivering this.”

The collaboration first started back in 2015. Following a merger, the trust was keen to do something about the ad-hoc fragmented nature of the procurement of medical supplies across their five sites. “For a single trust, product choices are complicated enough but with a merger the challenges are multiplied,” said Lucie Jaggar.

Barts Health now have a structured product switching process for clinical supplies and product changes which used to take around 6 months and now takes as little as 4 weeks. Engaging clinical staff was a key part of improving the process.

“Now senior nurses are the decision makers on the products generally used by nursing staff,” said Caroline Alexander, Barts Health NHS Trust, Director of Nursing. “The Clinical Evaluation Group allows discussions to take place and any barriers to be identified and addressed.”

Perhaps the greatest benefit from this project is that the partnership team model has become a blueprint to help other trusts around the country. Sharing case studies and savings examples has enabled a fast tracking of the same product switch at other trusts.

Delivering value to the NHS
