The NHS Core List

Tuesday 28 June 2016

The NHS Core List programme through NHS Supply Chain is focussed on reducing product and price variation at a sub category or product line level through commitment to one supplier. NHS Core List activity supports the transparency agenda and working towards the single national pricing model for the NHS. It underpins The Operational Productivity Review by Lord Carter aimed to reduce spend by collaboration and consolidating purchasing power, moving to alternative products where clinically acceptable  and  supporting national procurement strategies. Since 2014, the NHS Core List programme has delivered £5.4m cash releasing savings back to the NHS**.

Using a NHS Supply Chain Framework Agreement, NHS commitment is put through a mini competition process, most likely an e-auction, although the specific procurement mechanism may change depending on the characteristics of each market.

Upon award, unsuccessful suppliers will be delisted from the NHS Supply Chain online catalogue; this differs from the DH Core List pilot in 2014 where unsuccessful products were still available for customers to purchase. Prior to the E-Auction all participating suppliers will have provided the required assurance of their capability to supply on a national scale.

For procurement professionals NHS Core List provides the most straight forward option for driving out costs when purchasing everyday hospital goods and services, to potentially make more money available for frontline services.

Single Use Tourniquets

A great savings opportunity has now been generated on Single Use Band Type Tourniquets with cash releasing savings of up to £579k (38%) being made available across NHS trusts, based on current sales. This will be nationally available from August 2016 and full details of the products and prices will be released shortly - your Account Manager will be able to present what this new opportunity could mean for your Trust in early July.

Examination Gloves

We are also pleased to announce savings on Examination Gloves (Vinyl : non sterile stretched and non sterile stretched pigmented, Latex :  sterile and non sterile). Healthline offered significant price reductions which are all expected to be live in the catalogue by September 2016 with trusts able to benefit immediately thereafter. These reductions are expected to deliver savings of £1.2m (28.5%) nationally to the NHS. Your Account Manager will be able to share the potential savings opportunities for your Trust in early August.

Urine Drainage Bags

Significant savings opportunities have now been generated for Urine Drainage Bags (2 Litre Bedside Urine Bags and 500ml Leg Bags) with £1.1m (47%) national savings being made available from September 2016. Full details of the products and prices will be released shortly - your Account Manager will be able to share the potential savings opportunities for your Trust in early August.

NHS Core List products could offer substantial national savings to the NHS. We will continue to update you on potential savings opportunities from other NHS Core List products that we are working on in 2016 and beyond.

It is important to note that products not selected for Core List will be discontinued and will be unavailable for purchase through NHS Supply Chain.
