Software Updates for all eDC and eDC Gold Handheld (PDA) Devices

rolling out eDC Gold

As part of our continuous service improvement we will be updating the software currently installed on all eDC handheld (PDA) devices.

As part of our continuous service improvement, and to keep in line with the ever changing NHS landscape, NHS Supply Chain is replacing its current Remote Data Access (RDA) server.

This server processes all eDC and eDC Gold handheld (PDA) devices transactions and we're replacing this to provide a more secure and reliable service for our customers. This key update will also provide future development opportunities for hardware and software platforms, but it will mean a change to the current URLs on your PDAs.

Who will this affect?

This will affect all eDC and eDC Gold customers ordering via PDAs.

When are we doing this?

A national automatic software update is planned to be released week commencing 24 September and will be rolled out to PDAs during that week.

How will I know this has happened?

You will know this has occurred as you will need to carry out one of the actions below.

If you have already updated your network and firewall settings (see section 'How can I ensure I am prepared for the switch to the new server?' below for further guidance):

  • You will receive a notification on your PDA the first time you dock it asking you to update the software on your PDA. Instructions for doing this can be found at the bottom of this page. Please note that in some cases PDAs may not be updated all on the same day but all PDAs will receive the message following the switch. 

If you have not updated your network and firewall settings (see section 'How can I ensure I am prepared for the switch to the new server?' below for further guidance):

  • You will receive a notification on your PDA the first time you dock it advising you to contact our IT Helpdesk immediately.
  • You will not be able to place any orders until you have updated your settings and downloaded the software update on your PDA.

How can I ensure I am prepared for the switch to the new server?

To ensure you can continue to use your PDA to order via eDC or eDC Gold after the switch to the new server, it is important that you have followed the steps below before 24 September:

1. Contact your local IT department to add the following two new URL addresses to your network and firewall settings
(but please do not remove the current URLs).

2. Once your local IT has setup the URLs please select the link below to ensure you can securely access them.

  • If the successful connection page appears, you do not need to take any action.
  • If connection is not made, you will need to speak to your local IT department again.

Additional information for eDC Gold customers

If you are an eDC Gold customer please ensure you have completed all your transactions by 5pm on Wednesday 26 September.
