Contract Information

Surgical Instruments

The scope of the new Surgical Instruments framework covers a large variety of products including single use surgical instruments and packs, reusable surgical instruments, scalpels, blades and handles. These instruments come with the added benefit of single use instrument quality testing and an ISO 13485 accredited supplier base with Level 2 Labour Standards Assurance. These products are typically procured for general theatres, A&E, outpatients, podiatry clinics and central sterile services departments.

The framework covers six areas;

  • Single Use Surgical Instruments and Single Use Surgical Instrument Packs
    A wide variety of instruments including scissors, forceps, speculums (stainless steel), biopsy punch, nail clipper/nippers, retractors, needle holders, elevator and podiatry packs. To ensure instrument quality product sample submissions from applicant suppliers were sent for sample evaluation process conducted by an independent laboratory, namely; The Surgical Materials Testing Laboratory (SMTL) adding quality assurance to these products.
  • Reusable Surgical Instruments
    Reusable surgical instruments (general instrumentation) has now moved to a direct framework. For information on the pricing, tiered discount structures and for project based purchases please contact Alex Whittle – alexander.whittle@supplychain.nhs.uk for a unique reference number.
  • Scalpel Blades, Scalpel Handles and Disposable Scalpels
    Scalpel handles and a range of sterile (non-sterile if intended for post-mortem/ mortuary use) disposable scalpels (including safety) and scalpel blades. Our safety products are designed to assist users in meeting the requirements of European Directive on Prevention of Sharps Injuries 2010/32/EU and subsequent regulations intended to minimise sharps injuries in the healthcare sector.
  • Single Use Suction Tubes
    Now a stand-alone lot we aim to focus on offering a wider range of suction tubes such as Frazier, Magill and Zoellner. This range excludes the plastic suction tubing which is available on the Suction Consumables framework.
  • Self-Retaining Retraction Systems
    This is a new range to NHS Supply Chain opening up a whole new way to operate. The self-retaining retraction systems and stays are like having another set of hands enabling staff to perform other tasks, saving time, expense, and eliminating clutter at the surgical site. The highly flexible system of rings and stays easily adapts to the anatomical site.
  • Sterile Single Use Plastic Forceps
    Sterile single use plastic forceps for use in a wide range of medical procedures, supplied sterile and packaged individually.

Following the award process a further planned e-auction was held as part of the category strategy, on Lot 1, Single Use Surgical Instruments and Packs . The e-Auction has resulted in a rationalisation in this area to five suppliers creating further savings opportunities. These five suppliers products will be launched through further communications on 1 May 2017, the products and suppliers can be identified through the product matrix linked below.
