Polymer Aprons Quality Update

ICN number:250

  • Date:12/01/2018
  • Product area:

We continue to experience quality issues with polymer aprons supplied by HPC (ICN 187).

These quality issues were caused by an increased demand being placed on our current suppliers HPC due to the loss of other suppliers in the marketplace and the Chinese government imposing new rules on their factories.

We acknowledged previous feedback regarding the quality of aprons and advised that aprons of an improved quality would begin to enter the supply chain around this time.

We have been made aware by customers that there remain instances of substandard aprons within the supply chain and this is impacting patient care. Based on this feedback, we have taken the joint decision with the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) to suspend the sale of the HPC apron BTB089 until quality issues are resolved.

Alternative Aprons

Aprons from the Department of Health emergency stock will be made available for NHS Trusts to order through the online catalogue from Monday 15 January. There is sufficient stock of these replacement aprons to meet customer demand until the HPC quality issues are resolved. These aprons are of a higher specification and will have new NPC codes, but will be the same price, same unit of issue and same number of aprons per roll.

BTB089 is now unavailable until further notice.

Customers should order code BTB272.

Please be assured that product specification and quality is an issue that we take seriously and we are making every effort to rectify this issue as soon as possible.

We are working closely with both the NHSBSA and HPC to ensure that we can provide aprons of a satisfactory quality as soon as possible. We will keep customers updated on the reintroduction of stock of HPC aprons going forward but in the interim it is not expected that there will be any shortage in the supply of aprons. Trusts are asked to order as per their usual quantities.

Please note that any goods in transit may still be affected.

If you have any stock of the substandard product BTB089 please remove from use and we will advise the product recall process early next week.

Please contact customer services for any specific issues.
