Cavell Clinical Procurement Awards: Winners

We’re proud to share that three of our colleagues have been recognised in the very first Cavell Clinical Procurement Awards.
Maya Guerrero, Ian Dodd and Andrew Mitchell have been crowned winners across two categories – a fantastic achievement and a brilliant reflection of the depth of clinical and procurement expertise we have right here within our organisation.
We partnered with Cavell earlier this year, to launch the clinical procurement awards to shine a light on the incredible work happening across clinical procurement, often behind the scenes, but absolutely vital in improving patient safety, outcomes and experience.
Across five categories, Patient Safety, Patient Outcomes, Sustainability, Clinical Procurement Team of the Year and Rising Star we had some really strong submissions.
Patient Safety Award winner
Maya Aquino-Guerrero
A huge congratulations to Maya, who has been recognised for her outstanding work improving patient safety at a national level.
Maya has led a major initiative focused on making peripheral IV therapy safer, something that impacts thousands of patients every day. What makes this work stand out is how she’s brought people together: clinicians, procurement colleagues and patient safety leaders all aligned around one shared goal, reducing avoidable harm.
By accelerating access to innovative monitoring technology, Maya’s work is helping detect complications earlier and giving clinical teams a better chance to intervene quickly and safely.
The programme aims to reduce moderate-to-severe IV injuries by at least 40% across pilot sites.
This is such a great example of what happens when clinical insight and procurement expertise come together with a clear purpose.
It is a real privilege and honour to receive this recognition. This reflects the impact of bringing clinical insight and procurement together to drive safer IV therapy and reduce avoidable harm. I share this to my network. I take pride in being a part of a collective effort, focused on delivering safer care for patients across the NHS.

Clinical Procurement Team award
Andrew Mitchell and Ian Dodd
Massive congratulations to Andrew and Ian, who have been recognised for their work on a truly ground breaking programme.
Partnering with University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay and industry collaborators, they’ve helped lead a completely different approach to procurement in complex abdominal wall reconstruction, focusing not just on cost, but on long-term patient outcomes.
The results speak for themselves:
- Hernia recurrence rates reduced from around 80% to just 0.08%
- Pathway costs cut by around 50%
- Fewer bed days for patients
- Around £2 million in productivity and efficiency savings.
This work shows how procurement can actively shape better care, not just support it.
There’s an exciting next step for the team; the programme is now being looked at nationally as a leading example of value-based procurement in action.
It is a huge privilege to receive this award, and I am truly honoured to be recognised in this way. I am grateful for the support of procurement colleagues and mentors whose guidance and support has contributed to this achievement. I am proud to share this recognition with the wider team, whose commitment and collaboration enable us to improve patient outcomes, drive efficiency, and deliver real value for the hospital trusts we support ultimately enhancing patient care.
Ian Dodd, Engagement Specialist, NHS Supply Chain

This work shows how procurement can directly improve patient outcomes, not just support them. I am proud to be part of something that’s making such a meaningful difference, and excited to see how this approach can be adopted more widely to benefit patients across the system.
Andrew Mitchell, Category Lead, NHS Supply Chain
Our winners were celebrated at a virtual event hosted by Duncan Burton, Chief Nursing Officer for England on June 9.
Seeing our colleagues recognised in the very first year really highlights the calibre of talent, collaboration and clinical leadership we have within our organisation.
It also shows the impact we can make when we work collaboratively, think outside the box, and stay focused on what matters the most: better patient outcomes.
A huge well done again to Maya, Andrew and Ian, we’re very proud of your achievements.
