Driving Sustainability Forward With our Packaging Programme
We’ve rebranded the ‘Packaging Project’ to the ‘Packaging Programme’ to better reflect its ongoing nature and strategic importance, highlighting it as a long-term collaboration rather than a one-time project.
While progress has been made, challenges remain in securing supplier engagement and obtaining detailed data on the current state. I am excited to announce that the Packaging Programme is now integrated into our organisation’s new Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) framework. This strategic alignment will play a crucial role in driving sustainable packaging practices across our supply chain.
What this program will deliver for the NHS
Streamline clinical processes – A positive development is the inclusion of QR code instructions as an option on the CVC (Central Venous Catheter) framework. Making it easier for you to access important information quickly and efficiently. This will enhance patient care and streamline clinical processes. I will be working with our clinical teams to look and including this on more frameworks going forward.
Minimising environmental impact – We aim to prioritise waste reduction, followed by reuse and recycling, with disposal as a last resort. This approach supports our commitment to a greener NHS.
Choose reusable or recyclable materials– We should favour packaging made from reusable or recyclable materials whenever possible. This initiative supports our environmental goals and promotes sustainability.
Collaborate with suppliers- We should continue to engage with suppliers to implement packaging reduction initiatives. These collaborations can lead to innovative solutions that benefit both the NHS and the environment.
Supplier collaboration in action
We’re keen to join forces with our suppliers to tackle these issues and improve the sustainability of our supply chain.
A supplier of oral supplements was already actively engaging with Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust to address packaging challenges. We joined their meeting, sharing insights and collaborating on potential solutions. The supplier had already taken steps to reduce packaging waste by eliminating cardboard trays. They are also partnering with Sandwell Hospital on a recycling pilot, providing clear labelling and signage to guide good waste disposal practices.
This is a great example of joining forces to support the NHS net zero ambitions.
While we are excited about the progress made so far, we are currently awaiting further outcomes and results from these initiatives. We will continue to monitor and share updates as they become available.
Next steps
Reducing packaging waste is a complex challenge that requires collaboration and innovative ideas. By working together with healthcare providers, suppliers, and other stakeholders, we can achieve significant environmental benefits and contribute to a more sustainable healthcare system.
