International Day of the Midwife 2025: Celebrating Midwives’ Vital Role in Every Crisis
As we approach International Day of the Midwife, 5 May 2025, this year’s theme, “Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis” highlights the indispensable role midwives play in supporting mothers and babies through various crises. From the COVID-19 pandemic to natural disasters and conflicts, midwives have consistently adapted, to ensure that mothers and newborns receive the care they need.
At NHS Supply Chain, we are committed to providing the tools that enable midwives to deliver the best care possible. The role of a midwife is complex, extending beyond delivering babies.
Midwives offer care during pregnancy and childbirth, advocate for women and birthing people, and provide education on reproductive health, newborn care, breastfeeding and infant nutrition.
Watch our short video, follows the patient journey of Olivia, showcasing her experience through pregnancy and birth. It highlights the midwife’s role in ensuring Olivia’s pregnancy progresses well, including blood pressure checks, urine tests, blood taking, and listening to the baby’s heartbeat.

Delivering the right product to the right place at the right time is where our teamwork at NHS Supply Chain comes into play.
Our clinical community, comprising nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals, possess a wealth of knowledge and experience in using the products we supply.
They ensure that the products are fit for purpose, cost-effective, and of high quality through robust framework development and clinical insight.
As we celebrate International Day of the Midwife on 5 May, we recognise the unwavering support midwives provide to women and birthing people worldwide, in any crisis.
Their dedication and expertise continue to make a profound impact on the lives of mothers and babies, ensuring safe and healthy transitions into parenthood.
