Resilience

Our increased knowledge of the global manufacturing base following COVID-19 and subsequent global supply challenges, means we are better able to identify potential risks and mitigate them by building resilience into our sourcing strategies. We now have original equipment manufacturers available on the framework instead of a distributor, bringing the supply chain closer to the NHS.

How to purchase from the framework

Products available via our Stocked and eDirect supply routes can be purchased using our online catalogue or through your own purchase-to-pay system.

Ordering samples

Product samples are available from all of the suppliers on the framework.

Please note that the decision to supply samples, along with the unit of issue, supplied quantity, time to supply and free of charge nature of any request, is solely the decision of the relevant supplier(s).

Requests for samples should initially be discussed with your NHS Supply Chain ICS Manager. They will then work with you and the respective supplier(s) to agree requests and order on your behalf.

Savings Opportunities

Product switching will be available following the start of the framework. Analysis will take place to highlight cost effective alternatives and to identify switch and rationalisation opportunities. If you are interested in further information about product switching, please speak to our Hospital Care team.
See our Useful Links section for your NHS Supply Chain ICS Manager contact details.

The framework provides a National Pricing Matrix (NPM) which allows you to benefit from a discounted pricing structure from a supplier in return for either a value or volume commitment, for an agreed period.

The suppliers offering an NPM are:

  • Advanced Medical Solutions
  • Becton Dickinson
  • Elemental
  • Ideal Medical Solutions
  • Johnson and Johnson
  • Medtronic
  • Raise Healthcare
  • Sela Medical.

If you are interested in NPM savings, please speak to your NHS Supply Chain ICS Manager.

See our Useful Links section for contact details.

Sustainability and Social Value

Sustainability, net zero and social value are important elements in how NHS Supply Chain build our framework offering through the procurement process, tendering, supplier award and contract management. There are five mandatory requirements for suppliers to address supporting compliance with relevant PPNs and NHS England policy.

  • Carbon Reduction Plan (PPN 006)
  • Evergreen Assessment
  • Modern Slavery Assessment (PPN 009)
  • Social Value (PPN 002)
  • NHS England Net Zero Supplier Roadmap and Horizon Scanning

Awarded suppliers meet the current milestones on the net zero roadmap and have awareness and understanding of future milestones.

Social value
See our Downloads ▼ section for further information on suppliers’ social value commitments.

Sustainable opportunities
Value Based Procurement opportunities will be worked on during the lifetime of the framework agreement by conducting an environmental assessment to supplement its non-financial benefits. This will help quantify the sustainable benefits it brings to customers.

The following sustainable opportunity is currently are available on this framework:

Complex Abdominal Wall Reconstruction (CAWR) value-based procurement: Ovitex range (supplied by TELA Bio).

The VBP offers further opportunities for the following sustainability co-benefits: reduced consumption of product (when compared with alternatives which require repeat procedures), reduced consumption of associated consumables due to less procedures, reduction in transport emissions due to reduced patient visits and clinical time, emissions reductions due to lower consumption of anaesthetic gases.

The calculation of sustainability co-benefits (some of which are detailed on this page) is in progress. Benefits already calculated include:

  • Improved clinical outcomes.
  • Reduced requirement for additional surgery.
  • Avoidance of second stage procedures due to lower recurrence rates.
  • Significantly reduced patients requiring hernia recurrence surgery. During the study period, patients were on average 85% less likely to experience a hernia recurrence and a 57% reduction in Surgical Site Occurrences was recorded vs biological meshes and associated morbidities.
  • Mesh acquisition cost savings vs biological meshes
  • Operational and NHS system savings.

Clinical Information

We engaged with the following organisations and people, when developing this framework agreement and will continue to do so during its lifetime:

  • British Hernia Society
  • Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of UK and Ireland
  • Royal College of Surgeons
  • NHS consultant surgeons
  • Key surgical mesh suppliers.

Clinical expert group / NHS key opinion leaders in mesh implantation and repair, influenced the framework regarding new surgical techniques and the products that improve patient pathway treatment for improved surgical outcomes.

The framework has influenced the uptake of glue fixation and working with key suppliers and key clinical opinion leaders in the NHS, we have influenced the development of the NICE guidance Medtech Innovation Briefing (MIB). Through continued engagement with the clinical network we are seeing other manufactures entering this market, therefore more choice and competition is expected.
See our Useful Links section to view the NICE briefing.

About the products
Surgical mesh is a woven sheet which is used as either a permanent or temporary support for organs and other tissues during surgery. The meshes are used in a variety of surgeries and reconstructive work including hernia and abdominal repairs, and reconstructive work such as breast reconstruction or pelvic organ prolapse. The framework includes most types of surgical mesh including synthetic, biological and hybrid mesh, and products which are used in conjunction with mesh fixation such as staples, glues and self-fixation mesh systems.
