National Equipment Tracking and Information System (NETIS)

A platform providing a single coherent view of medical equipment assets in the NHS to drive enhanced decision making.

What is NETIS?

Led by NHS Supply Chain, in collaboration with the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC), the National Equipment Tracking and Inventory System (NETIS) is a central data platform that brings together medical equipment data from NHS trusts across the UK into one clear, easy to use platform.

By giving a shared overview off equipment across the NHS, we help teams make more informed decisions at national, regional and local levels.

Together, this insight can reduce costs, strengthen resilience and support better outcomes for patients.

Benefits:

  • A clear, trusted view of medical equipment across the NHS.
  • Better visibility to support faster, more informed decisions.
  • Opportunities to reduce duplication and make better use of resources.
  • Stronger planning and preparedness across the system.
  • Better outcomes for patients through more informed care.
  • Closer collaboration across organisations and regions.

Programme timeline:

How will we collect data?

We’ll collect data from trust maintenance equipment management systems, either through secure API integration or manual extraction, depending on local system capability.

We’ll refresh data weekly, so the platform remains accurate and reliable. You’ll always be able to see when the data was last updated, so you can make timely decisions with confidence.

NETIS initially captures 59 core data fields (shown on this page) from participating systems.

There’s also an opportunity to improve data quality through cleansing and standardisation. Your Implementation Manager can support you with this, including access to standard data field mappings.

Controlled access

NETIS is built with strong data governance at its core. We carefully manage access so people can only see the data appropriate to their role.

We tailor access levels to user needs and review them regularly to ensure they remain relevant and compliant. Where data is commercially sensitive, we protect it in line with Data Sharing Agreements and do not share it beyond agreed permissions.

The NETIS team manages user access and reviews it regularly to make sure it meets data protection and acceptable use standards.

How can you help?

Your involvement is key to making NETIS a success.

  • Connect with your Implementation Manager early.
  • Identify the right signatories for your trust’s Data Sharing Agreement.
  • Help us connect with the right people in your organisation.
  • Work with us to identify and remove any potential barriers early.

The NHS has shown what is possible when we work together, especially in challenging times. NETIS builds on that shared effort, helping us stay informed, prepared and ready to respond when it matters most.

With your support, we can make a real step-change in how data supports patient care. If you’d like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you:

Core asset data fields

The core fields that we would like to obtain data for in order to populate NETIS are in this table. We understand that field names could potentially differ, so we have included a description of the information we are looking for, to support in identifying whether it is something that you already capture.

Please note that the criteria listed is the ideal scenario. If you don’t currently capture all this information, it isn’t a problem and won’t impact on our ability to extract the data.

What could the future look like?

NETIS has the potential to go further. We’re already working with partners across the NHS and beyond to explore how it could deliver even more value.

We’re capturing these ideas while staying focused on building a strong, reliable core platform. We’re taking a measured approach so future developments happen at the right time, in the right way.

We welcome your ideas and insight. Your input will help shape what comes next.
