NHS Supply Chain launches first dedicated Scan4Safety framework

5 August 2026

We are pleased to launch the new Scan4Safety Framework – the first NHS framework dedicated to Inventory Management Systems (IMS) and Point of Care Scanning (PoCS) solutions.

Designed with input from NHS trusts, clinical and procurement colleagues, system partners and suppliers, the framework helps trusts make informed decisions when selecting inventory management and point of care scanning technologies.

Helping trusts choose the right solution

Every trust has different priorities. Some are looking to improve supply chain efficiency and gain greater visibility of inventory. Others are focused on reducing clinical risk, cutting waste and obsolescence, or freeing up more time for frontline teams.

The framework gives trusts a compliant and flexible route to market. It enables organisations to assess solutions against their local needs and choose the provider and system that best supports their goals.

Supporting safer, more efficient care

Inventory Management and Point of Care Scanning solutions can help trusts:

  • Improve both patient safety and cost efficiency.
  • Support greater resilience in their product supply chain.
  • Increase clinical productivity.
  • Gain better visibility of inventory, driving more efficient stock management.
  • Reduce waste from product expiry dates being reached or exceeded, over-stocking and product obsolescence.

Developed in line with NHS England data and technology standards, the framework provides greater clarity about available solutions and their capabilities, making it easier to compare options with confidence.

Trusts already using inventory management solutions have reported benefits including reduced stock holdings, lower levels of product waste and more time available for frontline patient care.

Greater choice and flexibility for the NHS

The framework includes 13 awarded suppliers and covers a broad range of products and services, including software, hardware, implementation support, training and consultancy.

The framework is divided into four lots:

  1. Inventory Management Systems
  2. Point of Care Scanning Systems
  3. Combined Inventory Management and Point of Care Scanning Systems
  4. Hardware and Devices

Lots 1 to 3 are accessed through a further competition process, allowing trusts to evaluate suppliers against their specific requirements. Lot 4 supports direct award, providing a streamlined route for procuring supporting hardware and devices.

A key feature of the framework is its support for collaborative procurement. Neighbouring trusts and healthcare organisations can work together, share learning and explore opportunities to achieve better value and efficiencies at scale.

The framework is open to all eligible NHS organisations, regardless of whether they participate in the NHS Supply Chain Inventory Management System programme.

A milestone for Scan4Safety

The launch of the Scan4Safety Framework is an important step in supporting NHS organisations to improve visibility, strengthen patient safety, optimise inventory management and make the best use of healthcare resources.

By offering a compliant route to market, greater choice and clearer insight into available solutions, the framework will help trusts identify and implement technologies that support safer, more efficient and more cost-effective patient care.
