MedTech Funding Mandate
The NHS Long Term Plan committed to accelerate the uptake of selected innovative medical devices, diagnostics and digital products. The aim is to use these in the treatment of patients much more quickly, so the MedTech Funding Mandate (MTFM) policy was established in 2021.
During the first year four cost-saving technologies were supported, with approval from The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and this was expanded to seven the following year.
See our Useful Links section for more information – with support on commissioning and funding arrangements available via the local Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) or NHS England and NHS Improvement’s Innovation Team – via AAC.email@example.com.
To be considered for the MTFM policy technologies should be:
- Effective: demonstrated through positive NICE Medical Technology Guidance (MTG) or Diagnostic Guidance (DG).
- Cost-saving within three years of implementation: as demonstrated by NICE modelling and published in a NICE resource impact template.
- Affordable to the NHS: the total costs should not exceed £20 million in any of the first three years.
