  • The supply issue with High Vac Drains products is ongoing.
  • If you use a high vac drain without a non-return valve, clinicians must be made aware that without a non-return valve, there is a risk of backflow. The purpose of the valve is to prevent this and lessen the risk of surgical site complications and possible infections.
  • It is advised that while the patient is in the hospital the drain should be checked regularly and, as long as the drain remains intact and the vacuum remains, the risk is considered low.
  • As time passes the integrity of the vacuum could lessen and risk increase.
  • The risk is greater where the drain has not been checked and cared for correctly, which may happen if teams discharge patients with these devices in situ, especially if community teams are unfamiliar with their different performances.
  • Please consider this when making decisions around discharge.
